Tonight, we were sitting around and Rob decided he needed to go to Big Lots for some sort of tool. Well, of course, every kid pipes in they they want to go. "Of course you can't go! Children aren't allowed in public after 7 p.m." Brenna, my 8-year-old, replied to that, "WHAT? We've been out that late before!" Of course I don't keep my children locked in the house after 7 p.m. but it had me wondering if I had been.
For as long as I can remember, I had thought that. I remember my mom telling me that children weren't allowed in public after 7 p.m., all to keep me from asking to go out with them on their anniversary. So... after believing this for years, and when I was quite old, probably around 12, my parents took me out on a rare evening outing. My dad milked cows at night and we NEVER, ever left the house after 5:00 except to go to Awanas on Wednesday nights. So out we are, at Jade Garden in Nampa. And I can remember sitting there, scared out of my mind that I was going to be arrested for being in public after 7 p.m. I know, I know... gullible, naive, blonde... whatever you want to call it. And the really sad thing about this, I thought this til I was in high school when I started working and I realized people took their families out to eat in the evening.
When I told my kids about this tonight, we all got a good laugh out of it. But it made me wonder if my mom remembers telling me this. So guess who I'll be making a call to tomorrow morning?
